The 15-character constraint on X (Twitter)

X has the tightest handle limit of any major platform. Fifteen characters is the single most important fact when choosing one, because names that work everywhere else simply will not fit.

Choose here first, then everywhere else

If you want one handle across all your accounts, X is the binding constraint. A 22-character name that is free on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube is worthless as a universal handle if it cannot exist here. Generate against the 15-character limit, confirm it on X, and then claim it on the more permissive platforms — doing it in the other order is how people end up with a set of handles that almost match. The rule of thumb is that anything short enough for X will fit everywhere else, so this is the only length check you actually need to run.

Underscores are your only separator

With no periods or hyphens available, a two-word handle either runs together or takes an underscore, and the underscore also eats one of your fifteen characters. This pushes X handles towards short compounds and single invented words more than any other platform's rules do. Invented words have a second advantage worth knowing: they are far more likely to still be free, so you spend less time cycling through rejections. If you do use an underscore, use exactly one and put it at the real word boundary — a second one reads as an attempt to route around a name that was already taken.

The display name carries the context

Because the handle is so constrained, the 50-character display name is where your actual description lives — your role, your city, your company, whatever context a stranger needs before deciding to follow. Unlike the handle, you can change it whenever you like, which makes it the right home for anything temporary: a job title, a project you are launching, a book that is out this month. Keep the handle short and permanent, and treat the display name as the flexible layer. Trying to do both jobs in fifteen characters is what produces handles nobody can read or remember.

Handle changes are instant and unprotected

X lets you change your handle freely and immediately, and releases the old one straight away. That sounds convenient, but it means an abandoned handle can be claimed by anyone within minutes — including someone who wants to impersonate you or capture your inbound links, of which there may be years' worth. The sequence matters if you do rename: set up the second account first and claim the old handle with it the moment it frees, rather than deciding to protect it afterwards. By then somebody watching for released handles will usually have taken it.
