A baby name is the longest-lived name on this site — it will be used for eighty years, in contexts you cannot predict. These are the checks worth doing while it is still easy.

Say the full name out loud, several times

First, middle and last together, in the tone of a school register and in the tone of an annoyed parent. Problems that are invisible on paper — an awkward rhythm, two names running into one word, a rhyme, a stress clash — are immediately obvious aloud, because the ear catches collisions the eye reads past. This single test catches most regrets, and it costs nothing. Pay particular attention to where the first name ends and the surname begins: a name ending in the sound the surname starts with will slur every time it is spoken quickly.

Check the initials and the obvious abbreviation

Write the initials as a monogram and read them as a word, since that is how anyone seeing a bag tag or a signet ring will read them. Then consider what the name shortens to, because that is what most of their friends will actually call them, and it will happen in the first week of school without consulting anyone. If you dislike every natural short form, you are effectively choosing that short form anyway — someone else will pick it, and their choice will stick for decades.

Popularity data is public and worth checking

Most countries publish annual name rankings from birth registrations, which makes this one of the few naming decisions with real public data behind it. The rankings tell you whether a name is climbing sharply — which usually means several classmates with the same name — or genuinely uncommon. Names can move a long way in a few years, so current data beats your impression of what sounds common, and your impression is usually a decade out of date because it was formed by the children you grew up with rather than the ones being born now.

Consider how it travels

If the name will be used across languages or countries, check the pronunciation and any unfortunate meanings in the languages that matter to your family. A name that requires constant correction is a small, permanent tax — paid at every introduction, every register, every appointment — and it is paid by the child rather than by you. One that works in both places is a quiet gift. Watch for letters that exist in one language and not the other, since those are where a spelling gets permanently mangled.
