Navies name by class, and it is systematic

Real navies assign names by ship class according to published conventions — a class of submarines might all take city names, a class of destroyers the names of admirals or battles, carriers the names of leaders. That systematic quality is what makes a fictional fleet feel institutional rather than assembled, because it implies a bureaucracy that made the decision rather than an author. Decide your rule, then name every ship in the class by it: readers who notice the pattern will infer a whole navy behind it without you describing one.

Virtue names are the oldest tradition

Endeavour, Victory, Intrepid, Dauntless, Resolution, Endurance. Abstract nouns of courage and persistence are among the oldest and most durable ship-naming conventions in the age of sail, and they still read as authentically naval centuries later. They work because they are aspirational statements about the crew rather than descriptions of the hull — the name tells you what is expected of the people aboard. That also makes them useful in fiction, since a ship named for a virtue invites the question of whether its crew lives up to it.

Science fiction has its own grammar

SF ship naming splits into the military-derived (class names, registry numbers, virtue names) and the deliberately whimsical — the long ironic sentence-names of Iain M. Banks's Culture ships being the most influential example. The two signal completely different kinds of society: one where a committee assigns names by regulation, and one where the ships name themselves and find the whole business funny. That is exactly why authors choose between them so deliberately, and why mixing them without reason muddles the setting.

Merchant and civilian ships name differently

Commercial vessels are named for owners, family members, ports, cargo routes and company conventions rather than for glory, because there is nobody to impress and a fleet to keep track of. If your ship is a working freighter rather than a warship, a mundane name — a founder's daughter, a shipping line's numbering scheme — is far more convincing than something heroic, and it does useful characterisation: a crew serving aboard a vessel named after the owner's family knows exactly where it stands in the company.
