The original eight come from an 1823 poem
Santa's reindeer were named in A Visit from St. Nicholas, the poem better known by its first line, 'Twas the Night Before Christmas. It was first published anonymously in the Troy Sentinel, a New York newspaper, on 23 December 1823. It is usually credited to Clement Clarke Moore, although the authorship has long been disputed. Its eight names are Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, and a final pair printed as Dunder and Blixem, Dutch for thunder and lightning. Later printings changed those to Donder and Blitzen, and Donner is the spelling most people know today.
Every one of them has two syllables
Read the eight names aloud and a pattern shows up: every one has two syllables, with the stress on the first. DASH-er, DAN-cer, PRAN-cer, VIX-en, COM-et, CU-pid, DON-der, BLITZ-en. The poem calls them out in pairs, so they work as a chant, and a name with the same shape slots straight in. Rudolph, added more than a century later, follows the same pattern. A reindeer meant to stand beside Santa's team will sound as if it belongs if it has two syllables stressed up front. A one-syllable or three-syllable name sounds like a visitor.
Rudolph began as a store giveaway
Rudolph is not in the poem. He was created in 1939 by Robert L. May, a copywriter at the Montgomery Ward department store chain, for a booklet the store gave away to children at Christmas. The song came ten years later: Johnny Marks, May's brother-in-law, wrote Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and Gene Autry's 1949 recording made it a hit. The 1964 stop-motion television special added most of the details people remember today. It is a useful reminder that the team is not closed. A new reindeer joined it once, and the name stuck for good.
Santa's team was probably female
Reindeer are the only deer species in which females regularly grow antlers. Adult males shed theirs after the autumn rut, usually by early winter, while females keep their antlers until they give birth in spring. A team pulling a sleigh in late December with a full set of antlers would therefore most likely be female, which is a fun detail to share with children and a good reason not to default to male names. Of the original eight, only Vixen reads as clearly female. The rest, like most names this generator makes, suit a reindeer of either sex.
Reindeer and caribou are the same animal
Reindeer and caribou are one species, Rangifer tarandus. Reindeer usually means the Eurasian animals, many of them herded, and caribou means the wild herds of North America. In northern Scandinavia, Sámi herders have worked with reindeer for centuries, and the Sámi languages have a large, specialised vocabulary for them, with separate words for colour, antler shape, age and sex. That suggests a practical approach borrowed from the people who know reindeer best: describe the animal. A name taken from its markings or its temperament fits better than a random festive word.

Tips for a name that sticks
Two syllables, stress up front
All eight of Santa's original reindeer follow that shape (DASH-er, VIX-en, BLITZ-en), and so does Rudolph. Match it and a new name sounds like part of the team.
Name them in pairs
Reindeer pull a sleigh two by two, and the poem calls them in pairs. Two decorations or two toys look planned when their names go together.
Describe the reindeer
Herders name reindeer by what they see: colour, antlers, temperament. A name taken from the actual toy or decoration always fits better than a random festive word.
Leave the famous nine alone
Unless it is meant to be one of Santa's own, a new reindeer deserves a new name. Children will otherwise ask where the real Dasher went.
Frequently asked questions
What are the names of Santa's reindeer?
The eight from the 1823 poem are Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner and Blitzen. Rudolph joined in 1939, more than a century later.
Is it Donner or Donder?
Both have been used. The 1823 poem printed the pair as Dunder and Blixem, Dutch for thunder and lightning. Later printings changed them to Donder and Blitzen, and Donner became the familiar spelling through the 1949 Rudolph song.
Do female reindeer have antlers?
Yes. Reindeer are the only deer species in which females regularly grow antlers, and females keep theirs through the winter, after adult males have shed them.
What can I use these reindeer names for?
Anything that needs one: a plush toy, a lawn decoration, a character in a story or school play, a team name for a Christmas game, or a dog in a reindeer costume.
